Attendance of Foreign Minister MOTEGI at the symposium“Celebrating 70: Japan-UN Cooperation, EXPO 2025, and the Future of Multilateralism”

On May 18, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended a symposium titled “Celebrating 70: Japan-UN Cooperation, EXPO 2025, and the Future of Multilateralism” held at the United Nations University, where he delivered a keynote speech.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that this year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the United Nations, and that the history of cooperation between Japan and the UN is also a history of Japan’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism. Minister MOTEGI also stated that in the difficult international situation, Japan will work closely with the UN to achieve unity among nations.
  2. In addition, Minister MOTEGI mentioned that the challenges facing multilateralism include the erosion of trust in the United Nations, which is responsible for international peace and stability, the re-examination of the nature of global governance, and the intensification of economic security competition amidst advancing technological innovations such as AI and digital technologies.
  3. Under multilateralism in this situation, Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan would further demonstrate leadership in the United Nations to form consensus and promote cooperation, particularly in the three areas of peacebuilding/conflict prevention, the rule of law, and UN reform, and clearly uphold its commitment to multilateralism centered on the United Nations.
