Japan-Morocco Foreign Ministers’ Video Teleconference Meeting

On May 8, commencing at 06:10 p.m. for 40 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a video teleconference meeting with H.E. Mr. Nasser BOURITA, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of Morocco. Following the meeting, the two ministers signed for a Joint Communiqué.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his pleasure at being able to hold talks with Foreign Minister BOURITA in this milestone year commemorating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, and stated that, taking the opportunity of this Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the issuance of the Joint Communiqué, Japan hopes to strengthen cooperation across a wide range of fields with Morocco, a country which occupies an important position linking Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, while keeping the broader regional context in mind. In response, Foreign Minister BOURITA stated that, with Japan as a reliable partner, Morocco intends to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields in line with the Joint Communiqué.
- Minister MOTEGI also welcomed the steady development of economic relations between the two countries, and the two ministers concurred to advance concrete cooperation not only in the automobile parts sector but also in areas that Morocco attaches strategic importance to, including renewable energy and phosphate rock as a raw material for fertilizers. On that basis, the two Ministers concurred to work together toward building “a strategic and mutually beneficial relationship” with respect to phosphate rock.
- Furthermore, regarding Western Sahara, Minister MOTEGI, while welcoming the adoption last year of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, expressed the expectation that, on the basis of this resolution, discussions will advance toward a mutually acceptable solution to all parties. In response, Foreign Minister BOURITA explained Morocco’s position on this matter.
- Both Ministers also exchanged views on current situations in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific and affirmed that they would continue to work together.
