State Minister for Foregin Affairs KUNIMITSU’s Participation in the Side Event on the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons

On April 28, commencing at 2:15 a.m. (local time on April 16 1:15 p.m.) for approximately 1 hours and 30 minutes, Dr. KUNIMITSU Ayano, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who visited New York, the United States, participated in a side event on the “International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP),” hosted by the Government of Japan.
- State Minister KUNIMITSU delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing that precisely because the international community is faced with deepening divisions and confrontation that we need dialogue and joint efforts involving both nuclear-weapon and non-nuclear-weapon States, as exemplified by the IGEP.
- At the outset, H.E. Mr. Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York and President of the NPT Review Conference and Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs also delivered remarks.
- Following the remarks, a representative of the International Group of Eminent Persons provided an overview of the IGEP’s recommendations. This was followed by a panel discussion among members of the Group, external experts and government officials based on these recommendations.
