Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Motegi by United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Nakamitsu

On April 9, commencing at 4:15 p.m. for 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations, during her visit to Japan.

  1. At the outset, Foreign Minister MOTEGI stated that amidst an increasingly severe security environment, in order to maintain and strengthen the NPT regime, Japan seeks to play an active role in finding common ground between nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, which will begin at the end of this month. Both sides concurred to cooperate towards the NPT Review Conference.
  2. Furthermore, both sides exchanged views on strengthening the functions of the United Nations (UN), taking into account that this year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan's admission to the UN. They confirmed the importance of Japan and the UN continuing to cooperate closely in the future.
