Japan-Oman Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On April 9, commencing at 4:50 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan welcomes the recent announcement by both the United States and Iran as a positive development. He also stated that what matters most is that de-escalation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved, and expressed his hopes that a final agreement will be reached promptly through diplomatic means.
  2. In addition, Minister MOTEGI emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint for global logistics and an international public good, and that it is important to ensure the safety of navigation for vessels of all countries, including those related to Japan. In addition, Minister MOTEGI stated that he would like to closely coordinate with Oman to this end.
  3. In response, Minister Badr stated that Oman has been consistently emphasizing the importance of resolving issues through dialogue and diplomatic means, and that Oman would like to continue cooperating with Japan towards the stabilization of the situation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
  4. Both ministers concurred on continuing close communication.
