Japan-Saudi Arabia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On April 2, commencing at 6:50 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his sympathy over the expanding damage in Saudi Arabia caused by Iranian attacks amid the ongoing tense situation. Minister MOTEGI also conveyed his respect for Minister Faisal’s personal efforts toward a diplomatic resolution through mediation, and stated that Japan will continue its diplomatic efforts toward the early de-escalation of the situation and would like to further cooperate with Saudi Arabia. In addition, Minister MOTEGI expressed his appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s utmost efforts to ensure energy supply to the market, despite the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
  2. In response, Minister Faisal explained that Saudi Arabia is continuing mediation efforts in cooperation with various countries to achieve a diplomatic resolution, and provided an overview of future prospects.
  3. The two ministers affirmed that they will work closely together toward the early de-escalation of the situation, and shared the view on the importance of ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, including from the perspective of stable energy supply.
