Submission of a draft outcome document for the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) by the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI)
March 26, 2026
- The Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will be held in New York from April 27, 2026.
- To this end, the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI), a cross-regional group of non-nuclear-weapon States led by Japan, submitted a draft outcome document for the Conference on March 24 to the United Nations Secretariat.
- The draft outcome document calls for concrete actions by both nuclear-weapon States and non-nuclear-weapon States with regard to each of the three pillars of the NPT: nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Japan intends to play an active role at the upcoming NPT Review Conference next month in identifying areas of common ground between nuclear-weapon States and non-nuclear-weapon States, including by engaging with relevant countries, together with other NPDI member States, with a view to ensuring that the elements of this draft are reflected to the fullest extent possible in the outcome document of the NPT Review Conference.
