Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On March 9, commencing at 7:25 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Dr. Seyyed Abbas ARAGHCHI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI conveyed Japan's grave concern over the continuing exchange of attacks and the deterioration of the regional situation, and urged Iran for an early de-escalation of the situation.
  2. Minister MOTEGI also condemned Iran's actions including its attacks on civilian facilities in the Gulf countries as well as actions that threaten freedom of navigation and safety in the Strait of Hormuz, and urged Iran to immediately cease such actions. Furthermore, while reiterating Japan's position that Iran's development of nuclear weapons must never be allowed, Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan, in coordination with the international community, will continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts to resolve issues surrounding Iran, including the nuclear issue.
  3. In addition, Minister MOTEGI requested Iran for the early release of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran and to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in the region.
  4. In response, Foreign Minister Araghchi explained Iran’s position and stated that Iran would continue to cooperate to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals.
  5. Both ministers concurred on continuing close communication.
