The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published passport statistics of the year 2025

On February 20, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has published passport statistics of the year 2025.

  1. In 2025, the number of passports issued was approximately 3.62 million, which is a 5.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Of these, the number of ordinary passports was approximately 3.60 million.
  2. The total number of valid passports at the end of year 2025 was approximately 22.82 million, which is a 1.17 million increase from the end of the previous year.
  3. The online application of passports has expanded its scope both to new and renewal applications since March 24, 2025. As a result, the overall usage rate for online applications in 2025 after March 24 marked a significant increase of approximately 44%, while the rate in 2024 was approximately 9%.
  4. In 2025, the number of reported loss or theft of passports was approximately 28 thousand, which is about 8% decrease compared to the previous year. About 80% of those were reported in Japan.
