Grant Assistance to the Kingdom of Thailand: Signing and Exchange of Notes Concerning Grant Aid “the Project for Strengthening Health Care Services for Displaced Persons from Myanmar in Tak Province"
February 17, 2026
On February 17 (same day local time), in Bangkok, the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand, Mr. OTAKA Masato, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Thailand, and Dr. Ailan Li, Country Representative of the World Health Organization in Thailand, signed and exchanged notes for "the Project for Strengthening Health Care Services for Displaced Persons from Myanmar in Tak Province" (project up to 453 million yen).
- The number of Myanmar people migrating or fleeing to Thailand has been increasing due to the deteriorating situation in Myanmar since the 2021 coup d’état. Consequently, medical facilities in Tak Province, which host refugee camps, have seen a sharp rise in outpatient and inpatient caseloads among displaced Myanmar nationals. Furthermore, the healthcare systems of host communities accommodating these displaced persons remain under sustained strain.
- In this context, improving sanitation and strengthening health and medical systems in local communities that host displaced persons from Myanmar are urgent and important not only for enhancing the living conditions of local residents and displaced persons in Thailand, but also for stabilizing border areas and, by extension, for maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the region as a whole.
- This project will repair facilities at training centers for Myanmar medical workers and at medical institutions for displaced persons in Tak Province along Thailand’s western border, and will also provide medical equipment and implement capacity building for health personnel. Through this cooperation, strengthening the health and medical systems of communities hosting displaced persons is expected to enable the provision of appropriate healthcare services and thereby contribute to regional stabilization.
