Japan-U.S. Extended Deterrence Dialogue
February 17, 2026
On February 19 (February 18 local time), the Government of Japan and the Government of the United States of America will hold a bilateral Extended Deterrence Dialogue (EDD) in the United States.
- As part of Japan-U.S. security and defense cooperation, the EDD provides an opportunity for the two governments to discuss issues of strategic deterrence, including the regional security environment surrounding Japan, Alliance defense posture, nuclear and missile defense policy, arms control and risk reduction. The Japane and U.S. sides will also engage in an in-depth exchange of views on means to enhance as well as deepen mutual understanding on alliance strategies and capabilities.
- The EDD was established in 2010 as a formal dialogue mechanism between the two governments and has been held on a regular basis ever since.
