The Nomination of Professor ASADA Masahiko, as a Candidate for Election to the International Law Commission (ILC) in 2027

The Government of Japan has decided to nominate Professor ASADA Masahiko, current member of the International Law Commission (ILC), for as a candidate for election for membership of the ILC to be held at the United Nations in autumn 2027.
- Professor ASADA, owning extensive knowledge over various fields of international law, has numerous achievements regarding international law, including as a member of the Institute of International Law (Institut de Droit International: IDI) and the Chairperson of the Commission for the Settlement of Disputes related to Confidentiality of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) as well as considerable work experience in this field such as the Committee on the Use of Force (Military Action with Consent) of the International Law Association (ILA). Professor ASADA has been contributing to the development of international law as the current member of the ILC since in 2023. Such achievements to date have been highly regarded by the international community, and it is very important that Professor ASADA continues to assume the role as the member of the ILC.
- Japan places great importance on establishing the rule of law from the viewpoint to bring about peace and prosperity of the international community and believes that the development of international law is essential. The ILC has been making a large contribution to the progressive development of international law and its codification as an organ of the General Assembly of the United Nations. From the point of view of making continuous contribution to the activities of the ILC, the Government of Japan will actively work to gather support from the other states towards the election of Professor ASADA.
