A Courtesy Call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs KUNIMITSU by Ms. Herviou, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

- State Minister KUNIMITSU welcomed Deputy Director General Herviou’s visit to Japan and expressed her appreciation for the IAEA’s cooperation in the efforts toward the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) including the discharge of ALPS treated water. She also stated that Japan would continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA to provide explanations to the international community regarding the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, based on scientific evidence in a highly transparent and sincere manner, and to foster better understanding both domestically and internationally.
- In addition, State Minister KUNIMITSU stated that Japan highly appreciates and supports the IAEA’s efforts regarding ensuring nuclear safety in Ukraine and strengthening international nuclear safety.
- In response, Deputy Director General Herviou stressed that the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea is in consistent with international safety standards and expressed her intention to further strengthen cooperation with Japan. She also expressed her appreciation for Japan’s support for the IAEA’s efforts in Ukraine.
- Both sides concurred that Japan and the IAEA would continue to closely coordinate together regarding this matter.
