Visit to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan by trainees from the training program “Emergency Assistance for Women and Youth in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon: Promoting Peace, Food and Economic Security through Entrepreneurship” hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
On February 3, commencing at 10:00 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. OBA Yuichi, Deputy Assistant Minister of International Cooperation Bureau and Ambassador for Global Health Diplomacy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a visit by the 35 trainees participating in the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) training program “Emergency Assistance for Women and Youth in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon: Promoting Peace, Food and Economic Security through Entrepreneurship.” The training program is implemented by UNITAR with support from the Japanese Government.
- At the outset, Deputy Assistant Minister OBA stated that, as the world faces multiple crises including climate change and conflict, Japan is advancing support and initiatives based on the SDGs under the principle of Human Security. He added that the Government of Japan had decided to support this training program implemented by UNITAR to address the challenge of food security – one of the critical issues impacted by these multiple crises.
- After the explanation of the training program and an expression of gratitude to the Government of Japan by Ms. MIKAMI Chisa, the Head of UNITAR Hiroshima Office, three representatives of the trainees introduced the outcomes of the training to date, their respective activities and their expectations for the training program in Japan.
- Finally, Deputy Assistant Minister OBA expressed his hope that participants would take the knowledge and skills gained from this training program back to their respective country and utilize them for the future of their countries.

Established in 1963, UNITAR's main duties are to provide training for government officials from developing countries and to conduct research related to the functions and objectives of the United Nations. Its headquarter is located in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2003, the Hiroshima Office was established as the only international organization office in Japan located in Hiroshima.

This training program aimed at supporting capacity-building for youth and others in Egypt, Iraq, and Lebanon to equip them with the knowledge and skills to improve food security and build sustainable food systems, and is being implemented by the UNITAR Hiroshima Office with financial support from the Japanese government. For this visit to Japan, 35 trainees who achieved particularly good results in the online course (Phase 1 & 2) have been selected, and it is expected that they would gain a deeper understanding of contents studied in Phase 1 & 2, including on-site training.
