Courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs HORII by Mr. Páll Nolsøe, Chair of the Council of North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO)
On February 2, commencing at 2:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Mr. Páll Nolsøe, Chair of North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO) / Counsellor, Department for Americas, Nordics and Arctic, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture of the Faroe Islands. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows:
- At the outset, State Minister HORII welcomed Chair Nolsøe’s visit to Japan and stated that Japan and NAMMCO share the position of supporting the sustainable use of marine living resources, including cetaceans, and that he would like to further strengthen cooperation. In response, Chair Nolsøe expressed his appreciation for Japan’s active contributions to NAMMCO, including research on cetacean biological resources, and stated his intention to further strengthen the partnership with Japan in this field. Both sides confirmed that they will continue cooperation to contribute to the international management of marine living resources based on scientific knowledge.
- State Minister HORII also expressed his appreciation for the participation of the Government of the Faroe Islands in Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, and stated that he would like to further strengthen the friendly relations between Japan and the Faroe Islands.

The North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO) is an international regional body established in 1992, with the objective of cooperation on conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic, headquartered in Tromsø, the Kingdom of Norway.
Japan has been involved as an observer since its establishment and has been providing NAMMCO with information obtained from cetacean surveys conducted by Japan in order to contribute to the international management of marine living resources.
Member states/regions: the Kingdom of Norway, Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Countries with observer participation: Japan, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, Canada, the Russian Federation, and Saint Lucia.
