Signing and Exchange of Notes Concerning Grant Aid “the Project for the Reinforcement of Custom Functions at the Sihanoukville Port New Container Terminal” and “the Project for Integrated Mine Clearance and Landmine Victim Assistance (Phase 3)” to the Kingdom of Cambodia

On January 12, in Phnom Penh, the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Mr. UENO Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, signed and exchanged notes concerning two grant aid projects (totaling 2.842 billion yen) to Cambodia. The outline of each project is as follows:

  1. “The Project for the Reinforcement of Custom Functions at the Sihanoukville Port New Container Terminal” (up to 1.142 billion yen)
    In Cambodia, due to rapid economic development, freight demand is surging, and a further increase in container cargo is expected after the completion of the new container terminal at Sihanoukville Port. This project aims to strengthen customs functions at Sihanoukville Port through the procurement of X-ray equipment for Cambodia. This will contribute to the country's trade and logistics development plans.
    The government of Japan announced “three new cooperation approaches” for Cambodia's sustainable development and co-creation of social values. This cooperation embodies one of three approaches, namely “Maritime Connectivity”.
  2. “The Project for Integrated Mine Clearance and Landmine Victim Assistance (Phase 3)” (up to 1.7 billion yen)
    The Government of Cambodia set the goal of "mine-free" by 2030. This project aims to improve operational efficiency and safety by promoting the digitalization and sophistication of the mine clearance sector, and to support demining activities, and clearing unexploded ordnance clearance as necessary. This will contribute to the country's economic and social development plans.
    The Government of Japan announced “three new cooperation approaches” for Cambodia's sustainable development and co-creation of social values. This cooperation embodies one of three approaches, namely “Japan-Cambodia Landmine Initiative”, and is also a part of the Japan-Cambodia Cooperation to Support Humanitarian Mine Action.
