Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers' Telephone Meeting

On December 22, commencing at 5:45 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the telephone meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his condolences for the victims of the mass shooting in Sydney and conveyed strong solidarity with the Government and the people of Australia.
- The two ministers exchanged their candid views on the current situation in the Indo-Pacific region and reaffirmed close cooperation between the two countries for peace and stability in the region. They also concurred to promote multi-layered cooperation with the U.S. and other like-minded countries, including frameworks such as Japan-U.S.-Australia and Japan-U.S.-Australia-India (Quad), to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
- The two ministers also reaffirmed the importance of bilateral cooperation in the field of economic security, including strengthening supply chain resilience for critical minerals, and concurred to enhance cooperation in this area, including the steady implementation of existing projects.
- Finally, the two ministers concurred to maintain close communication to jointly build momentum for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation next year and to outline the direction for future cooperation between the two countries.
