Emergency Assistance to Sri Lanka in Response to the Damage Caused by the Cyclone

  1. On November 29, 2025, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch an assessment team to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the massive damages in Sri Lanka caused by the cyclone. The team, which consists of 4 members including JICA staff and medical personnel, will monitor medical needs on the ground, and coordinate the possible dispatch of a JDR team. The team will leave Japan on November 30.
  2. The Government of Japan has also decided to provide emergency relief goods including tents and blankets to the affected people through JICA.
  3. In light of the humanitarian perspective and the close relationship with the people of Sri Lanka, Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance to those who are affected by the cyclone.

In Sri Lanka, in addition to the worsening weather conditions caused by the monsoon that has persisted since mid-November, Cyclone Ditwah struck the country on November 27 local time. This brought widespread heavy rainfall, resulting in 153 deaths, and approximately 770,000 people affected.
