Japan–Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Working Dinner

On November 17, commencing at 7:30 p.m. for approximately one hour and twenty minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a working dinner with H.E. Mr. Sugiono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, who is visiting Japan to attend the Japan–Indonesia Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting (“2+2”). The overview of the working dinner is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Minister Sugiono to Japan Referring to the discussions held immediately beforehand at the “2+2” meeting, he expressed his desire to further strengthen cooperation with Indonesia as Japan’s comprehensive and strategic partner, in a wide range of fields including economic field. In response, Minister Sugiono expressed his appreciation for Japan’s hospitality and stated that he wished to continue working closely together under the broad cooperative relationship between the two countries.
  2. Regarding the bilateral cooperation, Minister MOTEGI stated that Japan intends to promote cooperation with Indonesia in various areas such as decarbonization and energy, critical minerals, disaster management and infrastructure, and improving the business environment. Minister Sugiono expressed his appreciation for Japan’s cooperation over the years in a wide range of fields. The two ministers concurred on strengthening the Japan–Indonesia comprehensive and strategic partnership through promoting further cooperation.
  3. Regarding the regional and international affairs, Minister MOTEGI noted that a free and open international order based on the rule of law is under challenge in various parts of the world, and that it is increasingly important to advance efforts toward realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). The ministers exchanged views on ASEAN centrality and unity, global governance, the establishment of a free and fair economic order, and others. Taking into account the discussions at the “2+2” meeting, the two ministers affirmed the importance of collaboration in addressing regional and international issues.
