Revision of the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in Sinai Peninsula

At cabinet meeting on November 7, the Government decided to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in Sinai Peninsula to extend the dispatch period by one year.

  1. Japan has dispatched Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) personnel to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) since April 2019 and 4 staff officers are currently in charge of liaison and coordination with Egypt and Israel concerning the implementation of MFO’s ceasefire monitoring activities, and engineering support at the MFO Headquarters in Sharm El Shake, in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.

    The dispatch of staff officers to the MFO is recognized as contributing to the peace and stability of the Middle East, which is the foundation of Japan’s “peace and prosperity”. Additionally, it promotes collaboration with other contributing countries, and provides opportunities for human resource development.

    At cabinet meeting on November 7, 2025, in light of the aforementioned significance, the Government decided to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in Sinai Peninsula to extend the dispatch period by one year, as outlined below.

    According to the International Peace Cooperation Law Article 7 (i) and (iii), the contents of the Implementation Plan pertaining to the revision and the status of the implementation during the period before the revision will be reported to the Diet.

  2. The point of revision is as follows.
    Period of the Implementation Plan
    - Current: till 30 November 2025
    - After Revision: till 30 November 2026

(Reference) Overview of MFO (Multinational Force and Observers)

MFO is an international organization established based on the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in 1979 and its Protocol in 1981. Since 1982, MFO has been conducting ceasefire monitoring activities, and support for the promotion of dialogue and confidence-building.
