The 2nd World Summit for Social Development

The Second World Summit for Social Development was held in Doha, Qatar, from November 4 to 6. On November 6, Mr. OBA Yuichi, Deputy Assistant Minister of International Cooperation Bureau and Ambassador for Global Health Diplomacy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a statement on behalf of Japan. The summary is as follows:
- The World Summit for Social Development, first held in 1995 based on a United Nations General Assembly resolution, was the first summit in UN history to comprehensively address a wide range of social issues, including poverty eradication, employment, and social integration. The second summit was convened this time to reaffirm the promotion of social development and social justice, and to strengthen actions toward realizing a society where “no one is left behind”, in accordance with the ideals of the UN Charter and the 2030 Agenda.
- Deputy Assisatant Minister OBA emphasized in the statement that, in today’s society where various destabilizing factors are intricately intertwined, it is essential to embrace “Human Security” as a guiding principle of social development, and to cooperate through multilateralism, overcoming divisions, in order to realize the fundamental principle of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “leaving no one behind.”
- He also espressed Japan’s determination that as a nation at the forefront of addressing social challenges, Japan will also lead global efforts by sharing its experiences and expertise with developing countries, and that under the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), Japan will work hand in hand with like-minded partners that share our fundamental values as well as with the countries of the Global South.
