Participants to the Joint Committee

On October 21, the 6th Japan-Brazil Joint Committee on Cooperation in Science and Technology took place in Tokyo.

  1. The Joint Committee was co-chaired by Mr. KAWAMURA Hiroshi, Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, and H.E. Mr. Octávio Côrtes, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Japan, and Ms. Vânia Gomes da Silva, General Coordinator of Bilateral Cooperation, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and representatives from relevant ministries, agencies and companies of both countries participated in-person and online.
  2. The holding of this Joint Committee fulfilled the commitment made in the "Strategic and Global Partnership Action Plan Japan-Brazil (2025-2030)" announced by the leaders of both countries in March of this year. During the Joint Committee, both sides exchanged views on the recent development of national science, technology and innovation policies and confirmed collaboration and cooperation between funding agencies and research institutions. Additionally, active discussions were held on the current situation and future direction of science and technology cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as bilateral cooperation in sustainable development and environmental and climate change measures through scientific and technological cooperation based on the "Japan-Brazil Green Partnership Initiative (GPI)" as well as AI to solve social issues, digitalization, and healthcare.

  1. The two countries concluded Agreement on Cooperation in the field of Science and Technology in May 1984. Article 3 stipulates the establishment of a Joint Committee as an intergovernmental framework to discuss on science and technology related to the implementation of this Agreement and to ensure the promotion of cooperation under the Agreement.
  2. Based on this Agreement, the Joint Committee has been held alternately in Japan and Brazil. The last (5th) meeting was held online in September 2022.
