The First Japan-France Joint Dialogue on Cultural Cooperation

On October 16, the First Japan-France Joint Dialogue on Cultural Cooperation was held in Tokyo.

  1. The Joint Dialogue was co-chaired by Ms. OKANO Yukiko, Director-General for Cultural Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Ms. Valery Brisset, Deputy Director General of Cultural, Educational, and Scientific Diplomacy, Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic. Officials from relevant ministries and agencies of both countries attended both in-person and online.
  2. During the Joint Dialogue, both sides introduced their basic policies on cultural diplomacy and exchanged views on the current state of cultural exchanges between the two countries and concrete approaches toward the 170th anniversary of Japan-France friendship in 2028.
    In addition, discussions were held on measures for the protection and exchange of cultural properties, measures to support museums and art galleries, initiatives to promote the cultural and creative industries including bookstore promotion and the film industry, and plans to cultivate individuals who support regional culture. Both sides also exchanged views on such matters as each country’s language education abroad. Furthermore, based on the prospects and challenges regarding future cultural cooperation between Japan and France, both sides agreed to continue to work together.
