Japan-Sweden Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On October 14, commencing at 5:10 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Ms. Maria MALMER STENERGARD, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden, who is visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister IWAYA stated that he was pleased to meet Minister Stenergard again since the Japan-Sweden Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May this year in Brussels, and stated that he wishes to further strengthen Japan-Sweden relations and enhance cooperation in various fields such as security and economy, taking the opportunity of the visits to Japan by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf in May and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria this time to the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. In response, Minister Stenergard stated that she was pleased to visit Japan, and expressed her hope to continue close collaboration with Japan on bilateral relations, regional situation, and various issues international community is facing.
  2. Touching upon Minister Stenergard's visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park during her current visit to Japan, the two Ministers reaffirmed the cooperation between the two countries in the field of nuclear disarmament. They also exchanged views in a wide range of bilateral cooperation in fields such as nuclear energy, green transition, digital transformation, and life sciences.
  3. In addition, the two Ministers confirmed that Japan and Sweden will cooperate on various issues of the international community, including the situation in Ukraine and the situation in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
