October 11, 2025
From October 9 to 10, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs together with Mr. KOGA Yuichiro, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting held in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, hosted by South Africa, this year's G20 Presidency. The overview of the visit is as follows:
- At the meeting, active discussions took place under the three themes set by South Africa, this G20 Presidency: (1) Trade and inclusive growth and addressing global challenges, (2) Trade and investment for green industrialization and sustainable development, and (3) WTO reform and development dimension.
- State Minister FUJII made the following statements and contributed to the discussions at the meeting:
- The WTO is indispensable for Japan, but its reform is necessary. Discussions on WTO reform, including decision-making processes, developing country status, dispute settlement systems, and addressing non-market policies and practices, should be concretely advanced towards the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) in March next year.
- Promoting the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which was also discussed at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), contributes to enhancing connectivity. Additionally, at TICAD9, a number of initiatives were launched to address global challenges such as infectious diseases, disasters, and environmental issues. These initiatives for solving such challenges, which serve as a foundation for enhancing trade and investment and development, are essential for steady economic growth.
