Re-Election of Mr. METOKI as the Director General of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union (UPU)

On September 18, the election of the Director General of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was held, and a Japanese candidate, Mr. METOKI Masahiko, was re-elected as the Director General of the International Bureau in the 28th Universal Postal Congress.

  1. Having served as Chair of the Postal Operations Council which deals with the operational and technical aspects of the postal business since 2012, Mr. METOKI was elected as the Director General of the International Bureau in the 27th Universal Postal Congress in 2021. Since then, Director General METOKI has actively been engaged in strengthening UPU’s function and its financial reform. Currently, Director General METOKI is the only Japanese head of the specialized agency of the United Nations.
  2. Director General METOKI’s continued leadership as the Director General of the International Bureau with his expertise and experience in the international logistics will have a significant impact on the relationship between Japan and the UPU, to which Japan has consistently been contributing actively.
  3. Japan intends to continue to make proactive contributions, in collaboration with the UPU, to the promotion of fair and open rule-making to support international logistics including the fast-growing e-commerce industry.
