Minister IWAYA’s Attendance at a Ceremony for the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations University

On September 18, a ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations University (UNU) was held at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo in the presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the ceremony. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, following the video message by UN Secretary-General Guterres and remarks by Rector Marwala, His Majesty the Emperor delivered his address. After that, Foreign Minister IWAYA delivered congratulatory remarks, the overview of which is as follows:
(1) Minister IWAYA extends his congratulations on the 50th anniversary of the founding of UNU.
(2) UNU is the only UN organization headquartered in Japan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has actively supported UNU for half a century.
(3) As global challenges become increasingly severe and UNU’s role becomes ever more critical, Japan will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the international community by collaborating with UNU.
(4) Japan welcomes the wide-ranging cooperation with UNU in various fields and will continue to work with UNU to guide the international community from division and confrontation toward cooperation and reconciliation. - Approximately 250 participants attended the ceremony. In addition to Foreign Minister IWAYA, Ms. ABE Toshiko, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Mr. ASAO Keiichiro, Minister of the Environment, and Ms. KOIKE Yuriko, Governor of Tokyo, delivered congratulatory remarks.
