Japan-Hungary Foreign Ministers’ Meeting


On September 17, commencing at 1:10 p.m., Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, who is visiting Japan, for approximately 40 minutes. The overview the meeting is as follows:
1. Bilateral Relations
At the outset, Minister IWAYA expressed Japan’s intention to advance cooperation and exchanges in various fields with Hungary for the future, based on the historic friendship between the two countries spanning over 155 years. In response, Minister Szijjártó stated both countries have enjoyed long-standing friendship and relations based on mutual respect, and expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support of Hungary's Space Mission. He also conveyed his desire to continue to strengthen bilateral relations, including economic relations.
2. International and Regional Affairs
Minister IWAYA stated that it is very critical to realize just and lasting peace in Ukraine, recognizing that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable. Minister Szijjártó explained Hungary’s stance on the situation in Ukraine. In addition, the two ministers exchanged views on the situations in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue, and various issues in the international community and concurred on continuing their close bilateral discussions.
Minister Szijjártó expressed his understanding and support for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
