Passing of Judge ODA Shigeru (Statement by Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi)

  1. I am deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Judge ODA Shigeru, a former Member of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on September 4th.
  2. Judge ODA Shigeru served as a Member of the ICJ, the most authoritative judicial organ in the international community, for 27 years, from 1976 to 2003, the longest among the ICJ members so far and made extraordinary contributions. He was also selected as Honorary Member of the historic Institute of International Law (L'Institut de Droit International) and earned great respect as an international law expert.
  3. The Government of Japan highly appreciates Judge ODA Shigeru’s achievement in promoting peaceful settlement of international disputes and the rule of law in the international community and expresses deep respect for his contributions. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences and to send my deepest sympathies to his bereaved family.
