The Second Meeting of the Dialogue based on the Japan-Canada Memorandum of Cooperation concerning Battery Supply Chains (Overview)


On August 26, the Second meeting of the Dialogue based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the Department of Industry of Canada, the Department of Natural Resources of Canada and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada concerning Battery Supply Chains was held in Tokyo. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- The meeting was attended, on the Japanese side, by Mr. NOHARA Satoshi, Director General, Trade and Information Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. KURIYAMA Atsushi, Director, North America Economic Coordination Division, North American Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as officials from both Ministries, and on the Canadian side, by Ms. Isabella Chan, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister (Lands and Minerals), Natural Recources Canada and Canada’s Special Envoy for the Critical Minerals Production Alliance, and officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, the Department of Natural Resources and the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo.
- At this meeting, in oder to build sustainable and reliable global battery supply chains in Japan and Canada, the both sides reviewed the progress of concrete actions taken since the first dialogue held in October last year. They concurred to continue advancing further efforts in the following areas: (1) exchange of information on policies of the two countries, (2) measures to promote trade and investment, and (3) research and development.
- The two sides reaffirmed that they will continue to further strengthen their collaboration with the aim of building sustainable and reliable global battery supply chains, with the cooperation of research facilities and industry.

Signed on September 21, 2023 between the Government of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and the Government of Canada (Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development) with the aim of establishing sustainable and reliable battery supply chains, from the perspective of carbon neutrality and economic security. Established a dialogue to implement cooperation on battery supply chains.
