Japan-Liberia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 21, commencing at 4:05 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mme. Sara Beysolow NYANTI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), in Yokohama. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya pointed out that Liberia is a model of peacebuilding, having overcome a long civil war and established democracy.
    Then, Minister IWAYA expressed his congratulations on Liberia’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and stated his desire to cooperate for the peace and stability of Africa and the international community. In response, Minister Nyanti expressed her high appreciation for Japan’s efforts in TICAD and her intention to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the international arena.
  2. Following that, Minister IWAYA stated that Japan intends to support Liberia’s peacebuilding efforts through bilateral cooperation as well as through the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) platform and the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF). In addition, Minister IWAYA welcomed Liberia’s participation in the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, and its announcement of participation in GREEN×EXPO 2027, expressing his hope that these events will contribute to strengthening economic relations between the two countries. In response, Minister Nyanti expressed her gratitude for Japan’s past support and expressed her hope for increased investment in Liberia by Japanese companies, leading to the development of economic relations, and cooperation in various fields, including infrastructure.
  3. Both Ministers exchanged views on various regional and international challenges, including their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, as well as the United Nations Security Council reform, and concurred in closely working together to respond.
