Japan-Djibouti Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 21, commencing at 4:45 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Abdoulkader Houssein Omar, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Djibouti, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed his gratitude for Djibouti’s full support for the Self-Defense Force (SDF) facility in Djibouti and stated his wish to further develop the cordial bilateral relations between the two countries. In response, Minister Omar expressed congratulations on the holding of TICAD 9 and expressed his high appreciation for the anti-piracy operations conducted by the SDF and stated his hope for further strengthening relations with Japan as a strategically important partner.
- Following that, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan would like to work together toward the realization of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ and would also like to support the efforts of Djibouti, which also serves as the chair of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), toward peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. In response, Minister Omar expressed gratitude for Japan's efforts to date and emphasized the importance of cooperation with Japan for regional peace and stability.
- The two Ministers exchanged views on various regional and international challenges, including their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, as well as the United Nations Security Council reform, and concurred in closely working together to respond to these issues.
