Foreign Minister IWAYA’s meeting with Ms. Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)


On August 21, commencing at 4:20 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Ms. Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), who is visiting Japan to participate in TICAD 9. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Foreign Minister IWAYA welcomed Executive Director Russell's visit to Japan. He noted that the roles of UNICEF are becoming increasingly important as children worldwide face hardship due to the impacts of the international situation and disasters. He stated that Japan would like to work closely with UNICEF to promote human security. In response, Executive Director Russell expressed her gratitude for Japan’s support and her expectation for further strengthening the relationship between Japan and UNICEF.
- They exchanged views on the important role of Japanese personnel working at UNICEF and expressed their hopes for further cooperation.
