Foreign Minister IWAYA’s Meeting with H.E. Mr. Soares SAMBÚ, Guinea-Bissau‘s Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Integration

On August 21, commencing at 11:32 p.m. for approximately 22minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Soares SAMBÚ, Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Integration of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister IWAYA expressed his respect for Guinea-Bissau's active efforts towards peace and stability in the international community. In response, Minister Sambu expressed his gratitude for Japan's hospitality and commended Japan's efforts through TICAD to date and expressed his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the international arena.
- Following that, Minister IWAYA expressed his hope for the elections scheduled for November to be conducted in a manner that ensures transparency and inclusiveness. In Addition, Minister IWAYA mentioned Japan’s supports for the introduction of small-scale health insurance and for strengthening waste disposal capacity. In response, Minister Sambu expressed his gratitude for Japan's support in fields such as agriculture and human resource development, as well as his hope for further cooperation in fisheries and other areas.
- The two ministers also exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena, including United Nations Security Council reform.
