Breakfast Meeting Hosted by Foreign Minister IWAYA with Heads of International Organizations


On August 21, from 8:00 a.m. for approximately one hour, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, hosted a breakfast meeting in Yokohama with the heads of international organizations on the occasion of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister IWAYA paid tribute to international organizations and their representatives for their vigorous activities around the world, including in Africa, despite the current difficult international environment. He then outlined Japan’s contributions in such areas as its commitment to multilateralism, the promotion of the rule of law, and efforts to address global challenges. Minister IWAYA also expressed his expectation for the continued retention and further increase of Japanese staff members in international organizations.
- Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations stated that TICAD was the first of many partnerships with Africa, and Japan was praised for being a pioneer in showing how to stand by Africa. Following this, the heads of the participating international organization expressed their appreciation of Japan’s contribution and delivered remarks based on their respective experience and expertise, on the current challenges facing Africa, the future of the continent, and the roles that international organizations can play in this context.
