On August 18, 2025, commencing at 1:50 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with the Hon. Mr. Russ Joseph Kun, M.P, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Nauru, who is visiting Japan to attend the National day of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, State Minister Fujii mentioned that Japan and Nauru are precious friends connected with the Pacific Ocean and are important partners which share common values and principles. State Minister Fujii also stated that Japan is committed to strengthening the kizuna, bond of ties, with Nauru based on long-standing trust and cooperation. He welcomed the attendance of Deputy Minister Kun at the National Day event of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan on August 16, and expressed his hope that the Expo would help further develop bilateral relations between the two countries. Both sides concurred on further strengthening bilateral cooperation between Japan and Nauru.
  2. State Minister Fujii stated that Japan will follow-up on the outcomes of the 10th Pacific Leaders Meeting (PALM 10) held in July last year, and will continue to stride forward together with the Pacific Island countries. In addition, mentioning Japan’s contribution to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), State Minister Fujii stated that Japan is determined to work together to address common challenges such as climate change which Pacific Island countries regard as “the single greatest existential threat”, and the marine environment. In response, Deputy Minister Kun expressed his appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their cooperation.
  3. Both sides exchanged views on regional situations.
