On August 4, commencing at 4:00 p.m., for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York and Candidate for President of the Eleventh NPT Review Conference.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed Ambassador Viet's visit to Japan and expressed his respect to Ambassador Viet for taking on the role of the President of the Eleventh NPT Review Conference. Minister Iwaya stated that Japan, as the only country who have ever suffered atomic bombings during war, considers it its mission to lead international efforts under the NPT regime. In response, Ambassador Viet expressed his gratitude for the invitation by Japan and stated that he seeks to further strengthen cooperation with the Government of Japan toward next year’s NPT Review Conference.

Further, Minister Iwaya, while referring to his participation in the Third Preparatory Committee for the NPT Review Conference this year where he delivered a message emphasizing that we should overcome division through dialogue and cooperation, expressed that he seeks to collaborate with Ambassador Viet toward the success of the NPT Review Conference.
  3. Lastly, Minister Iwaya referred to Ambassador Viet’s participation in the UN Disarmament Fellowship 20 years ago and his visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and in response, Ambassador Viet stated that he has a vivid memory of that visit to Japan and that he seeks to renew his determination for the success of the NPT Review Conference through this opportunity to revisit Hiroshima in his capacity as athe candidate for the President of the NPT Review Conference.
