Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Working Dinner

On July 29, commencing at 5:30 p.m., Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting (for approximately 50 minutes) and a working dinner (for approximately 70 minutes) with H.E. Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK), who is paying a visit to Japan. The summary is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the visit of Minister Cho to Japan as his first visit overseas after taking office. Both Ministers valued close communications between both governments including high-level communications after inauguration of the new administration of the ROK. They reaffirmed the shared recognition that the Japan-ROK relations and the coordination among Japan, the U.S. and the ROK are important under the current strategic environment. They concurred that they would further progress the Japan-ROK relations stably. They also welcomed the progress of exchanges between the peoples of both countries including many commemorative events regarding the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations.
- Both Ministers engaged in candid discussions on regional situations. They shared their serious concerns over North Korea’s nuclear and missile development, the advancement of Russia-North Korea military cooperation and North Korea’s malicious cyber activities including cryptocurrency thefts, which fund its nuclear and missile programs. They reaffirmed that they would continue to work closely together between Japan and the ROK, as well as among Japan, the ROK and the U.S. Also, Minister Iwaya expressed his appreciation for the consistent support from the government of the ROK for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
- Both Ministers confirmed that both governments including between ministers would continue close communications on various issues.
