The meeting of Gavi’s fourth replenishment


On June 26, (25:local time), Mr. MATSUMOTO Hisashi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the fourth replenishment meeting of Gavi Vaccine Alliance (Global Summit: Health and Prosperity through Immunization), which was held in Brussels, capital of the Kingdom of Belgium.
- The meeting was co-hosted by the European Commission, the European Council, the Gates Foundation, and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance. It was attended by H.E. Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, H.E. Dr. António Luís Santos da Costa, President of the European Council, Mr. Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation, heads and ministers of donor countries as well as implementing countries to be supported, mainly in Africa, heads of regional organizations, heads of international organizations such as WHO, representatives of pharmaceutical companies, and representatives of civil society.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Matsumoto represented Japan at the meeting and stated that Japan has prioritized global health as a key pillar of Japan’s foreign policy and has been engaging in the achievement of the universal health coverage (UHC). Parliamentary Vice-Minister Matsumoto also promised that Japan will firmly and continuously support Gavi's mission to “leave no one behind through immunization”.
- At the replenishment meeting, major donors and private organizations such as the Gates Foundation pledged a total of approximately US$9 billion. The Government of Japan, as an important partner in the field of global health, will continue to further collaborate with the Gavi Vaccine Alliance for the benefit of human health around the world.

Gavi is a Private-Public Partnership established in 2000 with the aim of saving children’s lives and protecting people’s health by increasing the coverage of vaccines in lower-income countries. Gavi has helped 73 lower-income countries introduce and expand immunization, strengthen health systems and shape markets for vaccines.
