Japan-Israel Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On June 20, commencing at 7:10 p.m. (Japan Time) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Gideon SA’AR, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel. The overview of the talk is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed deep concern over the ongoing exchange of retaliatory attacks and the resulting extensive damage, stating that Iran's development of nuclear weapons is unacceptable and that efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue are essential. He also stated that any action that could further escalate the situation should be avoided, and that restoring calm is of the utmost importance. Additionally, Minister Iwaya called for support in ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals.
  2. Regarding the situation in Gaza, Minister Iwaya underscored the necessity of achieving a ceasefire and de-escalating the situation promptly to facilitate the release of hostages and improve the humanitarian situation. He also strongly urged Israel to abide by international law, including international humanitarian law, such as protecting civilians and further ensuring humanitarian assistance.
  3. In response, Minister Sa'ar explained Israel's position, and stated that Israel would cooperate in securing the safety of Japanese nationals.
  4. Both ministers concurred to continue close communication between Japan and Israel.
