Visit of Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications to Japan

From May 26 to 30, Ms. Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications will make a working visit to Japan.

  1. During her stay, Under-Secretary-General Fleming will visit the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, as well as holding meetings with government officials and private-sector representatives.
  2. The visit of Under-Secretary-General Fleming is expected to contribute strengthening the cooperative relationship between Japan and the UN, including in the field of communications.

Under-Secretary-General Fleming has held her current position since September 2019. She oversees the UN’s news, media, strategic communications, and digital communications, and leads campaigns to address pressing issues such as the SDGs, the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and misinformation. This is the second time Under-Secretary-General Fleming has visited Japan in her current position. Previously, she visited Japan in November 2018 as a spokesperson for the UNHCR to attend a meeting of public relations officials from various UN organizations, and in December 2022 to meet with government officials, including Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary KIHARA and State Minister for Foreign Affairs YAMADA.
