May 22, 2025
  1. On May 22, Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, summoned Mr. Gilad Cohen, Ambassador of the State of Israel to Japan, and stated the following points:
    1. Regarding the incident of warning shots fired by the Israeli military while a diplomatic delegation, including diplomats of Japan, was making a site visit to the Jenin refugee camp in the northern part of the West Bank on May 21 (local time), such an incident is deeply regrettable and should not have happened. The Government of Japan makes a severe protest to the Government of Israel and strongly requests a full explanation and prevention of recurrence.
    2. Japan reiterates strong concern over the attempted reoccupation of the Gaza Strip and the expansion of military operations, and urged the Government of Israel to allow a full and immediate resumption of aid into Gaza.
  2. On this occasion, Vice Minister Funakoshi also expressed his condolences on the killing of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, D.C., on March 21 (EST), and stated that terrorism is not tolerated anywhere in the world.
