Presentation of a Letter of Appointment as Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs to Dr. SEN Genshitsu



On April 21, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, presented Dr. SEN Genshitsu, the 15th Grand Master of the Urasenke tea ceremony (chado) school, with a letter of appointment as Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs (renewing his term until the end of March 2026), with the aim of spreading Japanese culture and promoting international cultural exchanges through tea ceremony, as well as promoting mutual understanding, friendship, and goodwill between Japan and various countries.
- Minister Iwaya expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Daisosho (former Urasenke Grand Master) Sen for vigorously promoting cultural exchanges with various countries through tea ceremony, as well as his expectation that Dr. Sen will continue to actively engage in such efforts.
- In response, Dr. Sen introduced his activities for promoting the appeal of Japanese tea ceremony, and the role that exchanges through tea ceremony play in fostering international peace. Dr. Sen also stated that he will continue to engage in initiatives for fostering international goodwill as Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Sen is the 15th Grand Master of the Urasenke tea ceremony school. He has served as the President of the UN Association of Japan since 2002, Japan-UN Goodwill Ambassador since 2005, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 2012, and Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2017.
