Japan-Grenada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On April 17, commencing at 6:00 p.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Mr. Joseph Andall, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development of Grenada, who is visiting Japan on the occasion of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations and the visit of the Minister Andall, expressed his hope that the bilateral relations will be further strengthen and the understanding of the Japanese people on Grenada will be deepen, by dint of the first Foreign Ministers’meeting in 4 months.
  2. Regarding cooperation in the water sector, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan plans to invite trainee from Grenada and provide training programs in Japan aimed at capacity-building in relation to the water security of small island states. He also referred to the progress in various efforts toward the development of people-to-people exchanges.
  3. In response, Minister Andall congratulated the fact that today is exactly the day of the 50th anniversary, stated that Grenada's participation in the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, is a sign of friendship between the two countries, and wished success of the Expo 2025 Osaka. The Minister Andall expressed his appreciation for Japan’s cooperation based on the three pillars of Japan's CARICOM Policy, and his expectation for further cooperation, including capacity building in the health among others, and revitalization of people-to-people exchanges.
  4. The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and international situations, such as North Korea including its abduction issue, and concurred in advancing further cooperation in the international arena, following last December’s Japan-CARICOM Ministerial Joint Statement, which stated that unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion are unacceptable. Furthermore, the two Ministers agreed to deepen cooperation as true friends on the occasion of this 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
