Japan-Luxembourg Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On April 11, commencing at 5:10 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Xavier Bettel, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, who is visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya, referring to Foreign Minister Bettel's attendance at the opening ceremony of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, expressed his gratitude for Luxembourg's commitment to the Expo and stated his intention to strengthen bilateral relations in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Luxembourg in 2027. In response, Foreign Minister Bettel stated that he was pleased to be able to visit Japan again following last June, and that Luxembourg would also like to liven up the Expo.
  2. The two Ministers concurred to further strengthen bilateral relations on the basis of the close relationship between the Imperial Household and the Grand Ducal Household, as well as through the visit of dignitaries to Japan on the occasion of this year's Expo. They also concurred to promote cooperation in the aerospace field, where active cooperation is taking place between the two countries, and to strengthen youth exchanges through the working holiday program that started last year.
  3. In addition, the two Ministers confirmed that Japan and Luxembourg will cooperate on various issues of the international community, including the situation in Ukraine and the situation in East Asia, such as their policies towards North Korea including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
