On 2 April, Japan-Australia-India-U.S.(Quad) Vice Ministers’ Telephone Talk was held, with Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Jan Adams, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs from Australia, Mr. Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary from India, and The Honorable Christopher Thomas Landau, Deputy Secretary of State from the United States. The summary is as follows. On 4 April, the Joint Statement by Quad Partners on Myanmar Earthquake Response was issued.
- At this consultation, the Vice Ministers and Deputy Secretary confirmed their commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in relation to the damage caused by the earthquake in Myanmar on March 28, and exchanged views on how to respond in a coordinated manner.
- The Vice Ministers and Deputy Secretary confirmed that the Quad will provide assistance for various humanitarian purposes for the people of Myanmar, and that the Quad will work closely together for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Myanmar, and will cooperate closely with regional partners, including ASEAN. Japan also expressed its readiness to provide a new emergency grant aid of USD 6 million through international organizations for further assistance.
- They also concurred on continuing to promote practical cooperation between the Quad in various fields to realize a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’.
