Grant Assistance to the Republic of Honduras:
Signing and Exchange of Notes on “the Economic and Social Development Programme”

March 27, 2025

On March 26, in Tegucigalpa, the capital of the Republic of Honduras, H.E. Mr. NAKAI Kazuhiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Honduras, and H.E. Mr. Eduardo Enrique REINA GARCÍA, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Honduras, signed and exchanged notes on “the Economic and Social Development Programme” (grant amount: 640 million yen).

  1. In Honduras, most of the people including the impoverished face difficulties in receiving appropriate medical services in a timely manner, due to a shortage of medical equipment in public medical institutions. In particular, mortality from cancer is high in the country, and the Government of Honduras has highlighted the development of radiotherapy equipment and the training of cancer treatment specialists as urgent issues.
  2. In light of this situation, in September last year, under the “Diplomatic Initiative toward Latin America and the Caribbean” (announced in February last year), Japan, Honduras, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed a letter of Intent on trilateral cooperation in medicine (radiotherapy) in Honduras.
  3. This programme aims to improve access to radiotherapy for the people of Honduras by providing cancer treatment equipment to the Honduran government, concretizing the above-mentioned trilateral cooperation. It will contribute to the enhancement of a stable healthcare system in Honduras.
