Emergency Assistance to Myanmar in Response to the Earthquake

  1. On March 30, 2025, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch an assessment team to Myanmar through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the massive damages in Myanmar caused by the earthquake which occurred on March 28. The team, which consists of 5 members including JICA staff and medical personnel, will monitor needs and the security situation on the ground, and coordinate the possible dispatch of a JDR team. The team will leave Japan on March 30.
  2. The Government of Japan has also decided to provide emergency relief goods including basic necessities to the affected people through JICA.
  3. In light of the humanitarian perspective and the close relationship with the people of Myanmar, Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance to those who are affected by the earthquake.

In Myanmar, the earthquake occurred on March 28 around 12:50 (15:20 JST) has resulted in a large number of those affected including the loss of lives, and significant physical damage. According to Myanmar’s state-run media, as of the evening of March 29, 1,644 people died, 3,408 people are injured, and 139 people remain missing. The number of victims is expected to increase as search operations continue.
