Grant Assistance to the Federal Republic of Brazil Signing and Exchange of Notes on “the Project for Enhancing Livelihoods and Ensuring Socio-Economic Inclusion for Women of Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants (in cooperation with UNHCR)”
March 26, 2025
On 24 March, in Brasilia, the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Mr. ISHIGAKI Tomoaki, Charges d'Affaires ad interim of Japan to Brazil, and Ms. Raquel TRABAZO, Deputy Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Brazil, signed and exchanged notes for “the Project for Enhancing Livelihoods and Ensuring Socio-Economic Inclusion for Women of Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants (in cooperation with UNHCR)” (grant amount: 104.25 million yen).
- As a result of the deterioration of the political, economic, and social conditions in Venezuela, approximately 7.77 million people had fled to neighboring countries by May 2024, with around 6.66 million of them to Latin American countries. Among them, Brazil is hosting more than 560,000 refugees and migrants. As there are still no signs of improvement in Venezuela’s political situation, most of these refugees and migrants have little prospect of returning to their home country and are expected to remain in Brazil.
- This project aims to provide support to Venezuelan refugee and migrant women across Brazil by offering vocational training, job placement assistance, and entrepreneurial support including training in microfinance and marketing. These efforts are expected to contribute to Brazil’s sustainable development by promoting the economic independence and socio-economic inclusion of refugee and migrant women.
