Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister IWAYA from Chair of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN)

On March 25, 2025, commencing at 14:00 pm, for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ambassador Tareq M. A. M. AlBanai, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations(UN), Chair of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform (IGN), who is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the visit of Ambassador AlBanai to Japan and emphasized that, while the Security Council is not being able to fulfill its expected role, we must not lose today’s momentum for concrete progress of Security Council reform, based on the outcome of the Summit of the Future last year.
- Minister Iwaya also stated that G4 countries (Japan, Brazil, Germany and India) are the driving force of Security Council reform and will continue to engage actively and constructively in efforts towards reform. In addition, Minister Iwaya also stressed the importance of the role of the UN General Assembly.
- In response, Ambassador AlBanai expressed his gratitude for the invitation and stated that he will further strengthen cooperation with Japan on issues in the international arena including Security Council reform.
